LOW VISION CARE
Sometimes as a result of eye disease or perhaps a birth defect, vision, even with the best glasses, is below normal and not adequate for work or recreational needs.
If this is the case we may be able to help with low vision aids such as magnifying glasses, lighting advice or by referral to agencies that provide other services for people with low vision. Our optometrist, Helen, worked in the Low Vision Clinic at Vision Australia for many years and enjoys using the skills she developed there to help her patients maximise their residual vision.

I became shortsighted around the age of 11 and realised in high school that I was much better at maths and science than at humanities. Like a lot of optometrists, I was having my eyes examined one day and had the flash of inspiration that this was something I could do. I really enjoy looking after my patients and know with certainty after 40 years of practice that I made the right decision.
Outside my practice, I've tried almost everything creative over the years, but have really found my passion in weaving. I completed a 2 year weaving course in 2006 and have been developing my skills ever since.
In 2024 I won the prize for the Most Innovative Entry at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show for my entry - Little Red Riding Hood's Too good for Landfill, Fire and Ice Cloak - made from re-purposed fabric samples, pictured on the right.
I even sell my handwoven glasses cases in the practice!

History
C Werner & Co is the oldest established Optometry practice in Victoria, having originally opened in the Fine Art Gallery in Ballarat in 1889. Our practice has remained an integral part of the local Toorak community from 1939 to the present day. Our gazelle logo, adapted from an Art Deco etched glass panel used in a 1933 renovation illustrates the individuality of the practice. We like to think that the attributes of the gazelle ' grace, beauty, elegance and speed ' are themes we embody throughout the practice both in our service and interior design.
Or as it said in our promotional postcard from the 1930s: That's all we do - Examine eyes and furnish Glasses - but we do it right
